Adult Martial Arts
Traditional roots. Practical skills. A positive martial arts experience.
Build strength, improve your fitness, and develop practical martial arts skills through a complete training system rooted in tradition and designed for real-world application.
Our foundation is rooted in traditional Kyokushin, but our approach goes well beyond any single style or competitive ruleset.
Students develop powerful stand-up striking, movement, distance, timing, clinch work, sweeps, takedowns, ground defense, and practical self-defense skills.
Traditional training, including kata, conditioning, discipline, and respect, remains an essential part of the experience.
Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning after years away, our instructors will help you build strong fundamentals and progress at a pace appropriate to your experience and abilities.
1. Stand-Up Striking
Develop effective punches, kicks, knees, and elbows while learning proper technique, movement, timing, distance, combinations, and defense. Stand-up striking is our specialty and the foundation of our physical training.
2. Clinch Work & Takedowns
Learn how to maintain balance, control distance, defend against grabs, and apply sweeps and takedowns when a confrontation moves into close range.
3. Ground Defense & Escapes
Develop essential ground skills, including positioning, escapes, control, and submissions. Our emphasis is on understanding how to protect yourself, regain control, and return to your feet when appropriate.
4. Traditional Training & Kata
Develop discipline, balance, precision, coordination, and focus through traditional training methods and kata. These practices preserve our Kyokushin foundation and remain an essential part of The Phoenix Way.
5. Practical Self-Defense
Learn awareness, boundary setting, protective movement, and practical responses to potentially dangerous situations. We emphasize recognizing problems early and making better decisions before physical confrontation becomes necessary.
6. Applying Your Skills
Build confidence applying your skills through guided partner drills, movement exercises, and progressively challenging scenarios. Learn to manage distance, adapt, and remain composed.
Our training is rooted in traditional Kyokushin, but we’re not limited by tournament rules or a single competitive format.
We incorporate controlled body striking, kicks, punches to the face with appropriate protective equipment, clinch work, sweeps, and takedowns as part of our integrated curriculum.
Students first develop proper technique and control. As their skills and confidence grow, we progressively introduce movement, resistance, and contact based on their experience and abilities.
Training is not about proving who is the toughest person in the room. It is about learning, improving, and helping your training partners develop.
We train with intensity, discipline, and mutual respect.
Do beginners have to spar?
Beginners are introduced to partner training progressively. Contact and intensity are adjusted to experience, skill level, and the objectives of each class.
Do you allow punches to the face?
Yes. We train punches to the face using appropriate gloves, mouthguards, and protective equipment. Bare-knuckle punches to the face are not permitted.

What brings them together isn’t their age, fitness level, or background. It’s a willingness to learn, challenge themselves, and become better.
Beginners Welcome
You don’t need previous martial arts experience. We’ll help you build strong fundamentals and progress at a pace appropriate to your abilities.
Fitness at Every Starting Point
You don’t have to get in shape before you begin. Training helps develop strength, conditioning, coordination, flexibility, and overall physical fitness.
It’s Never Too Late to Begin
We have students training well into their seventies. Age alone doesn’t determine your ability to learn, improve, and enjoy martial arts.
Experienced Martial Artists
Already have a martial arts background? Our integrated approach offers opportunities to expand your skills, challenge your assumptions, and continue developing.
Returning to Training
Whether you’ve been away for a few years or a few decades, we’ll help you find an appropriate starting point and rebuild your skills and confidence.
Rather than placing you directly into a group class, we begin with a scheduled introduction.
You’ll visit The Phoenix Way, meet Hanshi Anthony Codispoti, tour our facility, and have an opportunity to discuss your goals, experience, and what you’re looking to accomplish.
Hanshi will spend some time with you on the mat, introduce you to our teaching approach, and answer your questions.
It’s a chance for you to experience the environment, understand our philosophy, and determine whether The Phoenix Way feels right for you. Just as importantly, it’s an opportunity for us to get to know you.
Do I need martial arts experience?
Not at all. We welcome beginners and teach the fundamentals progressively. All we ask is that you come ready to learn, work hard, and respect the training environment.
Do I need to be in shape before starting?
No. Improving your fitness is one of the benefits of training. We help you build strength, conditioning, mobility, and confidence from your individual starting point.
Am I too old to begin martial arts?
Age alone should not prevent you from exploring martial arts. We have students training into their seventies. We’ll discuss your current abilities, goals, and any limitations to help determine an appropriate starting point.
Is The Phoenix Way an MMA or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition school?
No. The Phoenix Way is a complete martial arts system rooted in Kyokushin. We specialize in stand-up striking while incorporating clinch work, takedowns, ground defense, and practical self-defense. We are not a tournament-focused school.
What should I wear for my first visit?
Your first visit is a personal introduction rather than a traditional group class. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for stepping onto the mat. We’ll explain any equipment or training attire requirements before you begin regular classes.
How do I get started?
Simply schedule an introduction. You’ll meet Hanshi Anthony Codispoti, visit the dojo, discuss your goals, and experience our teaching approach before deciding whether The Phoenix Way is the right fit.
Whether you’re looking to develop real martial arts skills, improve your fitness, or become part of a supportive community, the first step is simply getting to know us.
Schedule a personal introduction, meet Hanshi Anthony Codispoti, and discover what training at The Phoenix Way can offer you.
